"I can't stop bleating on about this book..."
A cracking read which grips your attention and imagination throughout. The author presents a beguiling future in which human kind has abandoned the technology we take for granted and slipped back into a darker age. This book has a wonderful flow which makes it hard to put down and leaves you wondering when the next instalment will be available...
"I loved this book."
It is fresh, dramatic and fast moving. The author succeeds were many fail in creating visual impact throughout the book. I found myself empathizing with the main character even though he is less than endearing. It is a quirky, yet believable, tale of pitting sheer guts and determination to succeed against the odds but at the same time the text is laced with dark humour and I found myself laughing out loud, something I have not done frequently when reading. This a strong debut novel and i can't wait for the next one!
"A fast moving adventure story set in a gothic future world."
This book was is recommended to me by a friend. As a sceptic of all things astrological I did not expect to enjoy it and indeed thought I would find plenty to scoff at. What I did find was a cracking adventure story with plenty of exciting action that kept me turning the pages. The narrative travels through some very bleak places and it is times both disturbing and darkly funny. I hope there are more zodiac tales to come.
"This book takes the reader on an action packed quest in the company of a quirky, slightly flawed hero."
I read this book in a couple of sittings as it really caught my imagination. It is written from the perspective of the main character Gruffydd and you get to hear exactly what he thinks of the other characters he encounters and to share his dry sense of humour. The story concerns his arduous journey through wild lands to a strange place and back home again. The descriptions of the landscapes and the scenes that unfold are so vivid that you are there with him every step of the way. What I liked was the way his character grew and changed as the events unfolded. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to escape into a fantasy world.
"A great idea. Why has no one done this before?"
PJ Hetherhouse has stumbled upon one of those ideas which makes you wonder why no one else has ever done it. Furthermore, he has executed it well. The main character is exactly what you expect from a boy nicknamed 'The Goat' and there are some real laugh-out-loud moments included. I found the book so easy to read that I did so in three sittings. I can't say that as a standalone book, it really does 'stand alone' as there are so many questions left unanswered at the end. However, I suppose this is the author's prerogative in order to keep you coming back, and it is his/her skill that has left you caring about it.
"Could this be the start of an addicting series?"
This series is starting to get quite a following on social media and, after reading it, I can see why. It's quite an old-fashioned and basic quest novel written in a really fresh and modern way. The idea at the heart of it, 12 tales told by 12 zodiac characters, is something that is going to keep me interested! Quite a few of them seem to be going off on their own tangents and I'm really intrigued to see how the author pulls it all together!
"A great read!"
I was very, very pleasantly surprised by this book.
As a first novel, and a novel which I had assumed to be 'young adult', I wasn't sure what to expect with Tales of the Zodiac but was willing to give it a go. Then I was hooked right away! This is far better than many YA books, well written and darkly funny, with interesting and detailed characters. Although it wasn't the main character, Gruff, that pulled me in but pudgy Prince Libran and savage Shara.
Tales of the Zodiac ticked lots of boxes for me: well written women, a dystopian setting, dark humour and that Joe Abercrombie feel.
Well worth the read, I read it in two sittings!
Loved it! Stay with this one to the end. It’s really worth the ride. The tale begins with a classroom scenario we all painfully recognise and soon fast forwards to an enthralling race and a daunting quest that tests Gruffydd, son of a goat herd. Through murky bogs, across frozen seas to glittering halls the landscapes are stunning, the fights fast and furious, the characters enigmatic. It’s the tale of an outsider deliberately set a task against overwhelming odds who uses sheer guts and ingenuity to attempt it. His powers of endurance are awesome but utterly credible. Gruffydd is defiantly stubborn but ultimately against his will two women begin to challenge his resistance. It is so satisfying to spot the characters inspired by the zodiac in this fast paced story told with flair, humour and high drama. This is the debut novel of a powerful literary voice.
